In July 2013 the main Maliba Lodge building was devastated by a fire. Fortunately there was no injury as a result of the unfortunate incident, and all accommodation was left entirely unaffected, and has been perfectly operational during the construction period. The owners Chris McEvoy, Nick King, and Stephen Phakisi moved swiftly to plan, and personally fund a rebuilding program, faithful in the dedication of their valued Maliba staff.

This seemingly unfortunate event posed a silver lining whereby the new building would allow for much desired enhancements to be added to the new Maliba Lodge as well as provide contractual employment for over 50 Lesotho locals, above the lodge staff, who were incremental in the building of the new building, stepping out of their roles to be involved in the rebuild.

While the construction of the new main building transpired, a separate fully functional restaurant area with separate presentation and accommodation facilities was erected, and utilised as a main restaurant. This area will provide an idyllic private conference facility for future business groups entering the pristine National park.

Director, Chris McEvoy remarked on the fire.

The fire was devastating and a tragedy that was hard to come to terms with, but with the commitment to our local community, our guests and our staff we had to go on. We now have an even better facility that the whole of Lesotho can be proud of. The old lodge was a first in luxury and design for Lesotho the new lodge takes this to a whole new level and will amaze our guests

he said.

Stephen Phakisi, a Lesotho based director of Maliba lodge commented on his experience of the devastating fire.

I saw my dreams vanish like a Phoenix in front of my eyes when the lodge was reduced to ashes that fateful morning and I just couldn’t internalize the loss and the pain I suffered. Today, I am a great believer that it is that which you create in beauty and goodness that can stand the test of time. The iconic building that I so loved arose from ashes like a Phoenix, with more vibe and wow factor than before. This great return is all credit to my Australian partners who continue to share my dream towards greatness. Thank you Gentlemen

he expressed.

Lesotho based General Manager, Dwain Elliott, having been the first to notice the initial blaze, and having worked directly with the rebuild commented

I would like to thank all the staff and people who were part of the rebuild, a raindrop alone cannot create a raging river, nothing is impossible when we stand together to accomplish something
